Position Overview

The Operations Manager is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of beef processing plant operations, including production, safety, quality, compliance, and efficiency. This role ensures that production targets are met while maintaining strict adherence to USDA regulations, food safety standards, and worker safety requirements. The Operations Manager plays a critical role in driving operational excellence, developing teams, and optimizing resources to support profitability and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Production Management

    • Oversee daily beef processing operations, from slaughter through fabrication and packaging.

    • Ensure production schedules are met while maintaining quality and safety standards.

    • Monitor KPIs (yield, throughput, downtime, efficiency) and implement improvements.

  • Regulatory Compliance & Food Safety

    • Ensure compliance with USDA, FSIS, HACCP, OSHA, and company food safety programs.

    • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to maintain product integrity and pass regulatory inspections.

    • Support audits and implement corrective actions when needed.

  • Safety & Workforce Management

    • Promote a culture of safety and compliance throughout the plant.

    • Ensure adherence to worker safety standards, ergonomics, and proper training.

    • Supervise, train, and develop supervisors, line leads, and production staff.

  • Operational Efficiency & Cost Control

    • Optimize use of labor, materials, and equipment to reduce waste and improve yields.

    • Partner with Maintenance and Engineering teams to minimize downtime.

    • Assist in developing and managing operational budgets.

  • Leadership & Continuous Improvement

    • Lead operational initiatives to improve productivity, quality, and employee engagement.

    • Drive Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other process improvement programs.

    • Foster strong communication and collaboration across departments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Meat Science, Food Science, Animal Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.

  • 7+ years of beef or protein processing plant operations experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory/managerial role.

  • Strong knowledge of USDA, FSIS, HACCP, OSHA, and food safety regulations.

  • Experience in slaughter, fabrication, packaging, and/or further processing.

  • Proven ability to manage large teams in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ERP/production management systems.
