The Senior Project Engineer is both a design engineer and a technical project manager responsible for leading capital projects that support the organization's strategic objectives. This role manages projects aligned with the company's strategic asset management and capital investment plans to deliver long-term operational value.
Working under the direction of the Site Engineering Manager, the Senior Project Engineer acts as the supervising engineer for short- and long-term asset management, reliability, and engineering initiatives. Depending on experience, candidates may also be considered for Project Engineer or Principal Project Engineer levels.
Successfully manage large-scale capital projects end-to-end, leveraging internal teams and external partners to ensure projects deliver business outcomes and maximize asset value.
Manage project scheduling, communication, costing, procurement, and budget development while overseeing multiple projects simultaneously.
Typically manage 4-5 active capital projects at any time and commission 10-15 projects annually, with total annual capital investment potentially reaching $20M.
Mentor and develop less experienced engineers, providing technical guidance and project support.
Lead the implementation of capital projects including concept development, project team formation, process and design optimization, technical and economic evaluations, scope definition, estimating, scheduling, funding requests, detailed engineering, regulatory compliance, and project validation.
Ensure Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and Bills of Materials (BOMs) are accurate and up to date, tracking field changes and leading design and construction execution.
Build strong cross-functional relationships with teams including R&D, manufacturing, sales, maintenance, engineering, safety, quality, environmental, and finance to ensure successful project delivery.
Partner with business units to identify and resolve reliability, asset integrity, and engineering risks, working closely with vendors and equipment suppliers.
Manage project budget forecasting and spend within ±10% accuracy, while actively managing schedules, risks, and quality to achieve project goals.
Ensure internal engineering and project management standards are followed, including installation, operational, and performance qualification documentation.
Apply engineering principles such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and process controls to develop robust engineering designs.
Develop engineering models, risk assessments, and lifecycle asset cost evaluations to support strategic capital decisions.
Manage vendor relationships and lead the RFP process, including equipment selection, pricing evaluation, and contract review.
Facilitate effective written communication, decision-making, and risk review meetings, presenting project updates and recommendations to leadership.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering plus 5+ years of related experience, OR
Master's degree in Engineering plus 3+ years of related experience.
Ability to apply engineering principles, sound judgement, and analytical thinking to technical decision-making and problem solving.
Strong ability to develop practical and innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.
Experience developing engineering system designs that balance performance, cost, and operational requirements.
Working knowledge of production operations related to quality, yield, and cost efficiency.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, collaborate effectively, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
