Senior / Principal Primary Design Engineer

An established and growing engineering consultancy delivering high-voltage power infrastructure projects across Australia is seeking a Senior or Principal Primary Design Engineer to join its team.

This is an opportunity to play a key role in the delivery of major substation, transmission and renewable energy grid connection projects, supporting the ongoing expansion and transformation of Australia's energy network.

With a strong pipeline of projects nationwide, the business offers flexible working arrangements and the ability to be based anywhere in Australia.

The Opportunity

As a Senior / Principal Primary Design Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of HV substation and transmission infrastructure, working across a diverse portfolio of utility and renewable energy projects.

You will provide technical leadership, design oversight and mentoring, while working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and clients across the energy sector.

This role is well suited to engineers looking to step into a principal-level position or further develop their technical leadership within a growing consultancy environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the primary electrical design of HV and EHV substations

• Develop and review designs including:

  • Substation layouts and equipment arrangements

  • Busbar configurations

  • Transformer and HV equipment specification

  • Earthing and lightning protection systems

• Deliver designs for AIS and GIS substations

• Support the integration of renewable energy projects and grid connections

• Ensure compliance with Australian Standards and utility requirements

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineering teams

• Participate in design reviews, client engagement and project delivery

About You

You will be an experienced engineer with a strong background in primary design for power infrastructure projects.

Key requirements:

• Degree in Electrical Engineering

• Extensive experience in HV/EHV substation primary design

• Experience delivering transmission, substation or renewable energy grid connection projects

• Strong knowledge of utility standards and design practices in Australia

• Experience with AIS and/or GIS substation design

• Ability to lead technical workstreams and support junior engineers

Desirable:

• CPEng / RPEQ or working towards chartership

• Experience working with utilities, engineering consultancies or EPC contractors
