Principal Secondary Engineer

An established and growing engineering consultancy delivering high-voltage power infrastructure and renewable energy projects is seeking a Principal Secondary Engineer to join its Melbourne team.

The business provides engineering and automation solutions across power systems, high-voltage infrastructure, renewables, industrial and critical infrastructure sectors, supporting projects from concept through to detailed design, construction and commissioning.

The Role

Reporting to the Lead Engineer - Energy, this position will play a key role in leading the secondary engineering function within the Melbourne team.

The role combines hands-on technical design, technical leadership and mentoring, supporting the successful delivery of a diverse portfolio of projects including substations, renewable energy developments, battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar and wind projects, and infrastructure within the resources and utilities sectors.

This opportunity is well suited to an experienced engineer who enjoys balancing detailed engineering work with technical oversight and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and review protection and control schemes for HV substations

  • Undertake power system studies including load flow, fault analysis and protection coordination

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to secondary engineers

  • Act as a technical authority for complex engineering challenges

  • Manage and coordinate the design process across project phases

  • Engage with clients and stakeholders from feasibility through to commissioning

  • Support continuous improvement in engineering tools, processes and safety-in-design

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Professional engineering registration such as NER, RPEQ or RPEV

  • Strong working knowledge of AS3000 and AS2067

About You

You will be a highly experienced Secondary Design Engineer with strong technical expertise and leadership capability.

Key attributes include:

  • 10+ years experience in HV secondary design and engineering project delivery

  • Strong knowledge of protection and control systems for substations

  • Experience leading technical delivery and mentoring engineering teams

  • Proficiency with PowerFactory (DIgSILENT), PTW or ETAP

  • Exposure to PSSE or PSCAD is advantageous

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple project priorities

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills

  • Passion for developing and mentoring engineers within the team

  • Full Australian working rights
