Business Development Director - Academic Accounts, UK/IE

Ideally Based London, Oxford, Cambridge, Manchester

The Business Development Director is an important team member supporting the Company's rapidly growing international business. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and driving Sales activities within academic accounts in UK/IE. This will involve close working relationships with customers and internally with field sales, scientific support, commercial operations, regional marketing, and the lab operations teams. The Sales and Business Development Director will report directly to the Head of the Region in our International Business organization. He/She must be living in UK/ IE.


  • Drive sales activities within the UK/IE territory to grow the services business within academic accounts

  • Responsible for understanding customer's current and emerging needs, providing trends and observations to leadership for market evaluation
  • Support preparation of market, industry, and competitive analyses through voice of customer and voice of sales; support development and execute strategies to penetrate new markets and emerging programs
  • Plan, prepare and execute customer engagements and call planning
  • Coordinate with marketing team to recommend and support marketing strategies and to provide guidance/direction in external marketing communications (tradeshows, email, etc.)
  • Participate in relevant trade shows, industry days, and develop seminars/workshops to stay abreast of customer strategies, goals, and objectives and understand the competition
  • Develop territory plans and run execution with highest levels of accountability
  • Perform quarterly business review meetings with commercial leadership


  • A PhD degree in Life Sciences with a focus on and/or degree in biochemistry or related field. An MBA is a plus
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in working in academia with proven-track record of successful funding and publications
  • 2 years of experience in contract management, direct-sales and/or sales technical support role with extramural or complex teams required
  • Experience in leading and completing commercial contracts, primarily in the commercial segments Biopharma and applied markets but also with universities and other academic research institutes
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; will be frequently required to give presentations to internal and external audiences
  • Must be able to understand and present on our technology advantages using case studies
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams both internally and externally to manage and implement complex partnerships
  • Excellent analytical skills; able to synthesize data into insightful information
  • Attention to detail; accuracy
  • Ability to own and manage multiple key accounts and meet sales forecast
  • Strong time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead sales situations within complex and non-linear environments
  • Experience in active prospecting using platforms like LinkedIn, Global Data, etc.
  • Ability to influence non-direct reports and cross-functional partners within a complex internal sales and support matrix
  • Self-starter capable of working independently
  • Entrepreneurial by nature, self-sufficient and a great team player as well
  • Must be willing and able to travel 50-60% time
  • Ability to learn and apply Miller Heiman strategic and conceptual selling is required.
